CodeJoy is happening in California! Thanks to the Infosys Foundation USA 2023 C3 Grant, which awarded funding to five organizations working to increase access to CS and maker education, we teamed up with one of the awardees, the incredible Philistine Rondo School of Discovery in Eastvale, CA to unleash a coding adventure for 5th and 6th graders! Buckle up, because it’s been epic!
Rondo's Ready to Rumble!
Philistine Rondo's School of Discovery's Trevor Dietrich and Lisa Moe accept one of Infosys Foundation USA's five 2023 C3 Grant awards.
Project Overview
In this initiative, 5th and 6th grade students would learn to not only program robots, but teach other students to program them as well during intra-district field trips. Students from across the district get to experience the innovation happening at Philistine Rondo School of Discovery - directly from Rondo students themselves!
STEP 1: Teach the Teachers
In early November 2023, CodeJoy conducted virtual professional development on the Finch Robot, a codeable robot from BirdBrain Technologies, with 5th and 6th grade teachers.
STEP 2: Teach the Kids
In late November 2023, CodeJoy conducted virtual workshops for Rondo students, teaching them programming basics with the Finch Robot. The students were so excited be learning robotics themselves. Moreover, their focus was intense, as they knew that they themselves would soon be the instructors!
STEP 3: Inspiration!
In spring 2024, CodeJoy will be conducting live coding sessions with students, inspiring them to see what robotics can truly be. Along the way, we'll be reinforcing the coding concepts they learned in the fall, just in time for the upcoming field trips!
STEP 4: Field Trip Time!
In Spring 2024, students from across the district will be visiting Rondo School of Discovery to learn robotics directly from Rondo students!
